The Red Scrolls of Magic – Cassandra Clare
Our first book of the new year comes from our Recruitment Support Team Member Kaitlin! Kaitlin did a lot of reading to improve the never ending year that was 2020, and this mystical tale of love and secrets was one of her favourites.
If you’re looking for your next read we highly recommend diving into the world that is Shadowhunters and getting lost in the magic.
Don’t forget to email your latest fave to taylor.raymond@travelnurse.ca to have it featured in our monthly book club. :)
*Perfect for fans of Rick Riordan and Veronica Roth, the first book in a new series full of swoon-worthy romance and abundant action!
Summary
All Magnus Bane wanted was a vacation—a lavish trip across Europe with Alec Lightwood, the Shadowhunter who against all odds is finally his boyfriend. But as soon as the pair settles in Paris, an old friend arrives with news about a demon-worshipping cult called the Crimson Hand that is bent on causing chaos around the world. A cult that was apparently founded by Magnus himself. Years ago. As a joke.
Now Magnus and Alec must race across Europe to track down the Crimson Hand before the cult can cause any more damage. Demons are now dogging their every step, and it is becoming harder to tell friend from foe. As their quest for answers becomes increasingly dire, Magnus and Alec will have to trust each other more than ever—even if it means revealing the secrets they’ve both been keeping.
Kaity’s Thoughts:
If you’ve been sucked into the world of the Shadow Hunters since The Mortal Instruments series began like I have, this is for you! The fantasy world of demons, magic and the warrior descendants of angels continues in this book, the first installment in The Eldest Curses. This book follows two of our beloved characters, Magnus the warlock, and his boyfriend, Alec the Shadowhunter. Having just won a war in which downworlders and shadow hunters have worked together for the first time in a very long time, Alec and Magnus set off for a romantic vacation. Unfortunately they get caught up in a demonic cult, and end up needing to save the world (what else is new?) but the romance never dies! The story tackles the highs and lows of new relationship, the struggle of learning to love and trust yourself, and a society’s slow acceptance of a minority group that has been oppressed for too long. Heavy stuff for a young adult/teen fiction novel! It’s fun too, I swear. I loved being able to get a more inside look at Magnus and Alec’s relationship, and having the LGBTQ representation was refreshing to be found within a mainstream novel.
5 stars, would recommend!
