Self-Care Isn’t Selfish – Ish B., RN

Self care ; the phrase, the goal, the new wave to be riding. But what does it really mean? How is it possible to even describe something with cookie cutter words when it so deeply subjective to each individual? Perhaps it is something we figure out as time passes whilst our beautifully complicated messy lives unfold, especially in 2020. Maybe self care doesn’t include forced silence and meditation for some, maybe its facing all your own darkness and loudness so you can finally get to the silence and meditation. Sometimes self care is found in the act of surrender, to allow life to happen to you instead of you trying to happen to life. To know that you are worthy and loved deeply by life itself. It is in the time you take out for deeper breaths to calm down unruly nerves when you feel anxiety step into your temple unwelcomed, self care is learning to save yourself in moments of life where it is all crumbling. Self care is learning to be okay with crumbling. Self care is finding strength in saying no when you want to say no. It lies in doing more of what you truly love regardless of how absurd it might be to others. Solitude with sunrises and sunsets screams self care. It is eating foods that help your body function and vibrate higher. It is making conscious decisions on who to share your precious energy with. Self care is going out into mama nature’s playground and letting her guide you to your inner playground and sanctuary, a place where pure joy exists. The trees, the lakes and oceans, the wind, the forever changing skies, the creatures, all, a part of our journey as we travel nurse across the country and take care of other human beings in their sickest of days, mama nature is also taking care of us. We have chosen a line of work which requires so much of us to be poured out into the healing of another human being, lets make sure we are doing our part of keeping our cup full through all the beautiful different ways to care for yourself. Enjoy those days off heavily, it will show.

Cheers travel nurse fam warriors,
Nurse Ish ♡
