Travel nurse, Claudia, RN, was on the flight to her next assignment from Ontario to British Columbia when the stewardess called overhead to ask if anyone on board was a nurse or a doctor. Out of the over 200 passengers on the plane, she was the only one to respond to the medical emergency on-board. A young woman had lost consciousness mid-flight, but was awake upon Claudia’s arrival. Using the stethoscope from her carry on, Claudia assessed the woman, taking both a blood pressure and a blood sugar, and determined that the woman had experienced a vasovagal syncopal episode due to dehydration and the heat on the plane. Claudia’s findings were communicated to the Captain who contacted the medical team on the ground. It was determined there was no need to land as the woman was stable and feeling much better after drinking a litre of water. Luckily for everyone involved, this story had a happy ending, and Claudia even got a significant discount on her next flight as a thank you for responding to the emergency.
