Is this real life?
You bet it is! One of our very own Tech’s was swooped away on a romantic weekend trip to Paris and got engaged, all while on an assignment!
Read below to find out how the proposal happened, and how the team at Travel Nurse was in on the plan!
Hint: She said YES!
The beginning of May kicked off a brand-new chapter of my life as I started my first assignment with Solutions Staffing and never in my wildest dreams could I imagine the adventure it would bring me.
My assignment was a CLXT position in the Southeast Integrated Care Centre in Moosomin, Saskatchewan nestled along the Saskatchewan/Manitoba border. This was the furthest I had ever been from home, but I was excited to explore and take on a new adventure.
My second week there they sent me to Regina for training. As I finished my second day there, I sent my boyfriend, Anil, a quick text letting him know I was done to which he quickly responded by phoning me. He said I wasn’t going home that day and he was on his way to the city to meet me. I laughed him off, thinking he was joking around, and he just missed me. As far as I knew I had to work the next day. After much, much, MUCH hard work on his part he finally managed to convince me he really was coming to the city and I just had to trust him everything was taken care of. (I even phoned the facility manager and the lab to ask about my schedule, which had somehow magically changed so I had the next 2 days off.)
Anil and I have been dating for 4 years. We initially bonded over our interests in healthcare, our love of adventure and our dream to travel. But with both of us being students for most of our relationship, the dreams to travel had still remained dreams.
When he got to the city, he takes me we are going to the airport and in the airport parking lot breaks the news we are going to Paris, France for the weekend. FRANCE.
I had 2 sets of (dirty!) clothes in a bag, as I was only prepared to be sitting a classroom and lab for the last 2 days. I didn’t have a passport or euros or anything. There was no possible way I could go to Europe.
True to his word, Anil really, truly had taken care of everything. He had been planning this for months and was so determined to keep it a secret he never breathed a word of it to me, not even when I accepted my assignment with Solutions.
He made a secret trip to my family’s place (7 hours from him!) to pack me a suitcase and get my passport. He talked to my facility manager and got the days off of work for me and made sure my training schedule was adjusted properly. Got flights and hotels. And nobody let it slip. I didn’t have the slightest idea.
We went to Paris for 4 wonderful, jam-packed days and like something straight out of a movie he proposed to me in front of the Eiffel Tower at sunrise, with a photographer there to capture the entire thing and I don’t think I’ve stopped smiling since. It was without a doubt the best day of my life.
We flew back home late that night and just when I thought I couldn’t be surprised anymore you can imagine when I walked into work the next day and everyone already knew and was so happy for us. I had barely known these people a week but their heartfelt congratulations, wedding planning advice and excitement to see my ring were such a great welcome for me when I was so far from my family and friends back home. Not only was it my coworkers from the facility but from Solutions too, I had texts and emails from people I had only communicated with a few times before. Their friendliness and sociability calming any nervousness I had about working with a travel company and feeling alone or homesick.
I think it’s safe to say my first travel assignment will forever be my greatest adventure. I’m so grateful for everyone who played a part in my very own fairy-tale, secretly getting me days off work, rearranging my schedule, keeping the secret or wishing me a congratulations. And although the bar has been set pretty high, I can’t wait to see where else the company takes me and what other stories I’ll collect in the future.
